Cyfrowy Start is a series of interviews with Polish technology companies that actively support the digitalisation of the SME sector. We present solutions available through the PFR Technology Partnership, showing how they are tangibly helping other businesses in their digital transformation. We invite you to a conversation with Marta Lichota-Walaszkowska, Senior IT Project Manager at the Climate&Strategy Foundation.

What solutions do you offer as part of the PFR Technology Partnership?
In response to the new challenges climate change poses to doing business, we have designed a free carbon footprint calculator for small and medium-sized enterprises. It is an innovative yet easy-to-use tool for calculating carbon emissions across all three Scopes. It allows companies to take the first step on the path toward transformation and emissions reduction. The calculator supports businesses in data collection, raising climate awareness, and making informed decisions to reduce emissions.

What digitalisation problems do companies most often face, and how do you help them?
Representatives of small and medium-sized companies often come to us after unsuccessful attempts to calculate emissions using other tools. They worry that the process will be complicated and time-consuming. Our calculator proves that this doesn’t have to be the case. Once logged in, the user receives a checklist to help gather the necessary data. The next step is filling in all the fields with information. No software needs to be downloaded – everything happens online. Users often ask about data security and processing. We ensure that the data entered into the calculator is handled securely, in compliance with legal regulations and GDPR requirements.

Why did you join the PFR Technology Partnership, and what does it offer you?
At the Foundation, we provide strategic advisory services and support for companies in calculating their carbon footprint, developing decarbonisation strategies, and building resilience to climate-related risks. Working with large companies enables the Foundation to pursue its mission – which, beyond education on climate change and carbon footprinting and combating climate disinformation, includes providing free support to SMEs in calculating and reducing their emissions. We hope the PFR Technology Partnership will help us reach SMEs that have not yet started the process of measuring and reducing their carbon footprint. Through the calculator, we want to show them that it’s easier than they think and support them along the way.

Can you share an example of a company that has used your solution and achieved measurable benefits?
On our website, you can find stories of companies that have used the calculator. A good example is a prefab bathroom manufacturer who rated our calculator as the simplest and most intuitive tool available. Among the advantages, they highlighted the clear interface, educational path, and the generated report, which clearly showed the company’s carbon footprint and potential reduction opportunities. Based on this, they developed a five-year emissions reduction policy aiming for a 25% decrease.

What are your development plans and how do you intend to further support companies in digitalisation?
We continuously update and improve the tool. We are working on new educational materials to help users better understand the topic and support their climate transformation journey. We are adding new functionalities such as reduction action recommendations and company decarbonisation case studies. We also regularly update and expand the calculator with new Scope 3 emission categories so users can calculate and manage their carbon footprint even more precisely.

The Climate&Strategy Foundation has joined the PFR initiative – the PFR Technology Partnership, a platform that connects providers of modern digital tools with companies ready for technological transformation.
